Client Overview

A leading UK-based food production company required a robust and compliant fire alarm solution across its large-scale facility. With diverse environmental conditions—including areas with high humidity, washdown processes, and exposure to corrosive cleaning agents—the client needed a system capable of maintaining reliability and performance under demanding circumstances.

Project Objectives
  • Install a fully addressable fire alarm system to provide fast, pinpoint fire detection.
  • Ensure system resilience in a variety of environmental conditions.
  • Maintain full compliance with UK Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) and Fire Alarm Standards (BS 5839-1).
  • Design and install suitable containment systems, including corrosion-resistant materials in harsher areas.
Challenges
  • Harsh Operating Environments: Certain zones within the facility required equipment and containment solutions resistant to water ingress, chemicals, and corrosion.
  • Hygiene Standards: Food-safe installation practices had to be maintained throughout the project.
  • Operational Continuity: Installation needed to be staged to avoid disrupting live production.

Our Solution

System Design & Equipment
  • A fully addressable fire detection system was designed and installed, offering precise fire location and integration with the site-wide safety system.
  • Devices selected included IP-rated detectors suitable for wet and washdown areas, and heat detectors for high-temperature zones.
Containment Installation
  • Galvanised conduit and cable tray were installed in standard dry areas.
  • In areas exposed to water and corrosive agents, stainless steel containment was used to ensure long-term durability and hygiene compliance.
  • All containment was installed in line with BS 7671 requirements for mechanical protection and fire integrity.
Regulatory Compliance
  • System designed and installed in accordance with BS 5839-1 (Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems for Buildings).
  • Wiring and containment adhered to the latest IEE Wiring Regulations (18th Edition).
  • Certification issued following final inspection and commissioning.

Results

  • Full coverage of the facility with a high-performance addressable fire alarm system.
  • System tested and signed off without non-conformities or delays.
  • Increased fire safety compliance and reduced risk of false alarms or missed incidents.
  • Positive feedback from the client on the quality and cleanliness of installation work.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates our capability to deliver complex fire alarm systems in demanding industrial environments. By using the correct materials, adhering to all relevant standards, and coordinating effectively with the client’s operations, we ensured a safe, compliant, and long-lasting solution.
